A spaceship landed, and an imposing alien emerged.
"People of Earth, send forth your champion! We challenge you!"
"In what?"
"What do you mean?"
"We have champion knitters, runners, jumpers... thousands of things."
"You compete in everything?"
"Don't you?"
"Er... We must go now."

reminds me of the powerful "Run, Forrest, Run!" scene in Forrest Gump.

No, not the funny (second) use the phrase when he's grown up and runs swiftly through a nice wide-angle shot (a very memeable 2s capture).

I mean the first instance of it, where the kid passes a dramatic turning point in their life and overcomes their limitations – both physically, and emotionally.

This is the Zemeckis direction I love, as also seen in Back to the Future, and Polar Express.

Yeeaah 🤩, Dutchies are getting hyped about ice skating on 'real ice' or #natuurijs as we call it here! In the pictures are Gary Hekman and Irene Schouten, our champions marathon ice skating! Gary became the Dutch national champion in Enschede last year, and Irene has won every Dutch Championship of the ice skating marathon since 2016!

Of course, the debate about the pandemic immediately arises. I think the mental health benefits for everyone watching from home will easily outweigh the risks ;-)

"How to explain net neutrality" by Tikue Anazodo (for iAfrikan).

Makes two interesting analogies to help access the "big picture" issues.

Real example: neutrality failed in TV, with monopolies, complete channel packs, central budget control, and high barriers to entry for people to reach each other.

Hyphetical example: neutrality in road and postal infrastructure. What if it failed?

There's a lot more to it, but it's a good start.

So apparently the whole reason Smash Mouth's "All Star" starts with an acapella "some-BODY" is because they borrowed it from the Barenaked Ladies' "It's been one week." switchedonpop.com/episodes/ant

"Last Christmas", I heard it far too often and didn't think much of it, just another cheesy-engineered pop hit. Or is it?

In this episode, composer Chilly Gonzales treats us to a musical guide through the famous song.

I now believe it's more akin to an opera piece, following the structure of a rap song, with experimental jazz influences. Wicked, right?

In 1902 in a German town there suspended ("flying") railway. This two-minute recording gives us an impression of what life was like back then, throughout the town, and outside of it.

It was shot on 68mm from that railway, providing impressive levels of detail. #history #film #art #moma
